AWA
REMCO FIGURES & RING

SERIES 1 & 2

- COMPLETE -
For Sale

The AWA Remco Action Figure line was an action figure toyline based on the
wrestlers of the now defunct American Wrestling Association Promotion.
They were made by the toy company Remco from 1985 to 1986.
The toys were made of a solid plastic pose, with moveable waists, legs, arms, and heads.
Most came with accessories, from outfits to championship belts.
This was actually the first line of wrestling figures available for sale in the United States,
preceding the very popular WWF Wrestling Superstars line from LJN which also debuted in 1985.

This set is unique for releasing figures in 2 or 3 packs as opposed to single figure packs.
The only figures available in single figure packs was the final series in the collection,
the highly collectible Mat Mania series released in 1986.

The set has become increasingly valuable in recent years.
The most common figures are the figures released the earliest,
and the most sought after are the final series.
Loose figures are valuable if they come with the original accessories.
The Mat Mania series released in 1986 have been sold on ebay for anywhere from $400-$12,000.

Highly collectible and popular among wrestling and toy enthusiasts, these figures are seen far less
often on the secondary market than the WWF figures of the time, and were only produced from 1985 to 1986.
Even with the short run, and the fact the AWA was going down-hill fast,
if you were a wrestling fan at the time then these figures certainly ring a bell.
It was also an interesting line in that it features the first ever figures of performers who went
on to achieve some pretty major success such as Shawn Michaels, the Road Warriors, and Scott Hall.

The line didn't do very well but these He-Man-like figures were actually
very cool and were probably the best merchandise the AWA produced.
If the WWF figures had one drawback, it was also their most endearing feature.
They were NOT articulated.
Sure they were big and cool and stood out in the crowd, but when it came to actual play...
the imagination got more of a workout than the figures.
Though they were thrown and tossed and got pretty battered,
you could not actually put them into many, if any, wrestling holds.
The AWA Remco figures were different.

These 5" figures featured movable arms, legs, a swivel waist,
and a turning head (a rubber one that easily came off and on).
They were far more traditional in terms of "action" figures and the
previously mentioned He-Man likeness in the body sculpt was not a coincidence.
Remco tried to mimic the popular Mattel Masters of the Universe line in appearance and playability.
Though the AWA figures were not quite as "limber" having no rubber bands in the waist and legs.
These AWA figures were the first wrestling figures from the U.S.
that featured any kind of articulation at all.

The figures came with plenty of fun accessories.
Most figures had removable robes, belts, jackets, chaps, pants,
or some other article that resembled what they actually wore or used in the AWA.
Some of the coolest accessories included glittery robes to resemble sequins or rhinestones,
cotton rimed robes to resemble feathers and boas, and even the Road Warrior's signature spiked collars.
Remco did an excellent job in trying to capture the details of a wrestler's ensemble
and make it all removable for a more realistic look when they were actually wrestling!
But the body shapes were far from accurate.
The Remco figures had only three sculpts to be used over and over again.
The first and most common was the He-Man muscle body.
The second was the brawler type of fitness with more bulk and less muscle definition.
The third was the female body which was only used once for Precious;
the manager of Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin and Steve Regal.

Another unique aspect of this line was the fact they were available in 2-packs, and then 3-packs with managers.
You could head to the store with your allowance and come home with a match ready to go.
This may also be one of the reasons that this line eventually failed.
In the AWA's only opening in the 80s to make a run at merchandising,
they released 2-at-a-time figures from a roster that was very very thin.
They were running out of stars by 1986 and there was no incentive for kids to hit the stores and drop more money.
Near the end of the line's run, they tried to do single figures, but they failed to catch on.
The production numbers were low as it was and stores couldn't move what little they had.
The AWA figures just didn't POP - at least for the casual fan.
Ultimately, this is what undid the line...and arguably the company as well: Poor branding.

One more note on a detail that made them rather unique back in the day.
Even with goofy rubber heads, Remco managed to get a very good likeness for many of the wrestlers.
The Larry Zbyszko figure is down right eerily perfect.
The Road Warriors were close as was Paul Ellering.
The Fabulous Freebirds, Jerry Blackwell, Nick Bockwinkle, and Carlos Colon also deserve mention.

    HISTORY OF THE AWA

The American Wrestling Association was an American professional wrestling
promotion based in Minneapolis, Minnesota that ran from 1960 to 1991.
It was owned and founded by Verne Gagne and Wally Karbo.
The territory was originally part of the National Wrestling Alliance,
becoming an independent territory in the late 1950s.
