This show was marked by a power-hungry Shane McMahon
disrespecting and insulting his father Vince, the ominous and
unnerving debut of the Corporate Ministry, and a wild tag team
match that ended with both Shane and Vince flat on their backs
while Stone Cold Steve Austin celebrated with his trademark beverage.
That night at the New Haven Coliseum actually began with
Vince McMahon revealing a rarely seen sensitive and downright
compassionate side to the sold-out crowd.
The WWF owner came to the ring accompanied by his only
daughter Stephanie. Both father and daughter were visibly
humbled and exhausted from the traumatic events of earlier in the week.
You might recall, just a few days prior, Stephanie was
dramatically rescued from the evil clutches of the Undertaker by
none other than notorious McMahon adversary Steve Austin.
Vince actually praised the Rattlesnake’s heroism, and even
admitted his own ruthless business sense had come at the expense
of his family. In a speech that bordered on sappy, Vince
proclaimed he would “stop and smell the roses” from now on.
Shane couldn’t stand to hear another sentimental word.
Flanked by his loyal Corporation, Vince’s power-drunk son
quickly descended on the ring and condemned his father’s new
outlook and softening personality.
After sending Vince and Stephanie back up the ramp, Shane’s
first order of business was to book an intriguing tag team
match, ultimately meant to punish his two most noteworthy foes:
Reigning WWF Champion Austin and recently-terminated Corporation member The Rock.
Rock and Austin, never the best of friends to begin with,
would be forced to team up and take on Triple H and Shane’s
newest partner in crime — the Undertaker.
Austin and The Rock reluctantly agreed to temporarily put
aside their differences for the electric main event battle, and
actually won the match due to outside interference from the
Corporate Ministry.
But the official outcome was a mere afterthought to how the night would end.
Seconds after the Corporate Ministry stormed the ring,
disgruntled former Corporation members Big Show, Test and Ken
Shamrock came to the aid of the People’s Champion and Austin,
clearing the ring and momentarily restoring order.
What unfolded next was pure carnage.
The battle between The Rock and Triple H spilled out of the
ring and into the stands, leaving Austin alone with Taker, who
was still fuming over that week’s RAW, when Stone Cold ruined
his black wedding ceremony with Stephanie.
Vince, who decided to stick around backstage after all,
rushed the ring himself and promptly greeted a meddling Shane
with a furious right hand. The suddenly reformed Vince then
actually tried to save Austin by attempting to pry a metal chair
out of Undertaker’s evil grip.
He had no chance in hell.
Undertaker, who helped engineer the unholy alliance between
his Ministry and Shane’s Corporation, exacted quick revenge by
knocking Vince out with a vicious chair shot.
But Austin would have the last word on SmackDown!
First, the popular champ took down Taker with a Stone Cold Stunner.
Meanwhile, an unrelenting and spiteful Shane began to pummel his now unconscious father.
So you’ll never guess who came to the rescue.
Indeed, Austin delivered his most devastating Stunner of the night, ending Shane’s eventful evening in style.
Stone Cold then popped a few beers, and just to make sure
nobody thought he was developing a soft spot for the boss, he
even gently poured some his drink on Vince’s prone body.
